A tour of Bellarmine House and its beautiful grounds

On Sunday, May 6, 1990 the Cohasset Historical Society sponsored
a tour of Bellarmine House and its grounds. It was a wonderful day and
a wonderful event. Thanks to the continuing generosity of the Jesuit
Community and the Trustees of Boston College we have been invited
back on Friday, June 20, 2008 and Saturday, June 21, 2008.Two great
opportunities to enjoy a piece of Cohasset History not often available.

The house is located on a high knoll overlooking the Harbor and a
spectacular panorama of the harbor entrance out to Minot’s Ledge Light
and the Glades.  Bellarmine House was built in 1880-81 for Dr. John Bryant,
a yachtsman and sportsman and designed by the most renowned American
architect of the 1880’s, H.H. Richardson.  Others of Richardson’s many
works include Trinity Church in Boston, Crane Library in Quincy, the
New York State Capitol, five buildings in North Easton and about 150 more.
A graduate of Harvard and Ecole des Beaux-Arts, his career lasted only
twenty-one years; he died in 1886 at age 47.

The tour will feature a few of the rooms in the mansion that is now owned
by Boston College.  The public will enjoy the rare opportunity afforded by
the paralleled vistas of Cohasset’s harbor and shore as well as by the
beautiful walks and terraces on the unspoiled eight acres.

Bellarmine House, now named after a 17th century Italian cardinal,
Saint Roberto Bellarmino, was also leased by Thomas Lawson for several
years while he built Dreamwold in Scituate.  Lewis Crossett, a shoe
manufacturer, has owned the house and by Adelaide Moors Brown
(Mrs. William) who sold the property to Boston College in 1932 for use
as a recreational and seminar center for students and clergy.

Parking will be at St. Anthony's Church, Cohasset. There will be a
shuttle bus to The Bellarmine House from St. Anthony's parking lot.
The Bellarmine House is approached from the Cohasset Yacht Club.
A limited amount of handicap parking is available next to the House,
but walkers can savor the view if they park on Howard Gleason Road
and use the pathways from the gate.
